Joystick Kit and display kit

Joystick Kit and display kit

The joystick is pretty simple, but there are still things that you can do incorrectly.
You will notice that your kit came with the joystick cable already attached, and the connector crimped on the far end. The IDC connectors need a special tool to crimp them properly, and once the wire is in place, you should not solder, or the heat will melt the insulation and cause a short.
The joystick can only go into the card one way. Once seated all the way, use a blunt tool to bend over the 4 mounting tabs to secure the assembly to the board. Solder all connections. Next insert the switches all the way, and solder them in place. You are finished.

Display Kit
The display board is pretty simple, and is the same for either the discrete or the bicolor type.
The right angle connector is installed, the 2n3704 transistor, and the eleven 150 ohm resistors are soldered in first.
Preparing the leds
The leads of the leds and the photo diode are cut to about 1/4 " from the rear of the led.
Attach leds using bezel/fixture to align and hold
The leds are polarity sensitive parts, inside the led, one lead is long and reaches towards the other, and the other is short and wide. The photo silk screened into the board shows the correct orientation for the leds.a backwards led will not light.
